Side a / side b with Epsilonn
Meet Montreal’s slowcore enthusiast, Epsilonn
Following up his 2021 album Entropy, Colin Blissett, under his monicker Epsilonn prepares to release his sophomore effort We Guilty Beings on Sad Songs. We asked the big questions in anticipation to the release.
How would you describe your sound?
This album’s kind of like for when you’re walking around at night after an absolutely awful day and you just need something to feel like you’re not dealing with it alone.
What’s your favourite track on the new album?
I think my favorite track on this album is Bloom cause I was trying to depict anxiety and the importance of having someone to comfort you when you’re struggling and that’s a really important message for me.
What was your most cursed day of recording?
My most cursed day of recording was definitely doing drums because I did the drums for every single song in one day.
Favourite piece of gear used?
My favorite piece of gear that I used on this album is hands down, without a doubt, the Proco Rat 2. The distortion that that pedal gives is honestly exactly what I’m going for with my sound.
What were you snacking on while making the album?
To be completely honest, my favorite snack while recording was definitely a beer but when I was mixing I’d always have my mouse in my right hand and a banana in the left.
What were your main influences while recording?
One of my biggest inspirations for this album was Helvetia. Just from a songwriting and recording perspective cause it can get minimal but still feels like there’s a lot going on and of course the use of four tracks as well.
Another one was Pinegrove cause they’re an absolutely phenomenal band and they’re great at capturing their own emotions and translating them to the listener which was something i really wanted to do with this release.
Another would be Unwound. They’re without a doubt one of my favourite bands of all time and honestly i dont know where to start with how they influenced this album. But i can say anytime i was writing a heavier part i was thinking ‘what would Unwound do?’.
Another artist that really inspired me is Toe. Toe has really excellent guitar work, specifically guitar harmonies, and those inspire me a lot in pretty much everything i do.
And finally Fleetwood Mac, specifically with their instrumental tracks like Sunny side of Heaven or My Dream. They’re really pretty songs with great guitar parts and good vibes .
